PET OWNERS URGES TO PREPARE FOR EVACUATION

BISMARCK – Pet owners who may be forced to leave their homes because of flooding should make preparations for the care of their animals.

“If possible, you should not leave your pets behind,” says Dr. Beth Carlson, deputy state veterinarian. “While human safety is of the utmost concern, your pet’s safety could be at risk, especially if you are unable to return home soon.”

Carlson said persons who are unable to find accommodations for their pets should contact the following for information on and locations of available shelters.

  • Cass County                          (701) 476-4007
  • Grand Forks County              (701) 775-3732
  • Pembina County                    (701) 265-4849
  • Richland County                     (701) 671-7954
  • Walsh County                         (701) 352-2311

Carlson also said owners should also have a portable kit for the pet with the following items:

  • Pet food and treats
  • Drinkable water in plastic bottles
  • Can opener for canned food
  • Pet medications and medical records in a waterproof container
  • Leashes, harnesses and/or carriers
  • Current photos of the pet in case they get lost
  • The name of the pet’s veterinarian
  • Pet beds and toys.

All pets should have an identification tag and collar.
