ND Department of Agriculture Press ReleasesFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MARCH 27, 2009 PET OWNERS URGED TO PLAN FOR EVACUATION BISMARCK – North Dakota animal health officials want Fargo-area pet owners to make preparations for evacuating their animals. The state veterinarian, Dr. Susan Keller, said people who leave their homes with their pets should first go to the Reception Center at the Red River Valley Fairgrounds in West Fargo to learn where shelters are available for them and their animals. The fairgrounds are located at 1805 W. Main Ave. Keller said it is likely that in many cases owners and pets will be sheltered at different locations, but that is very important to remove pets from evacuated homes. “We encourage owners to make every effort to take their pets with them, when and if they evacuate their homes,” Keller said. “Leaving animals behind puts both the animals and rescuers in possible danger.” Keller also said owners should put together a portable evacuation kit which includes the following items:
All pets should have an identification tag and collar. -30- MEDIA: For more information, please call Dr. Susan Keller or Dr. Beth Carlson at (701) 328-2655.
