GOEHRING ISSUES REGISTRATION FOR HERBICIDE FOR YELLOW MUSTARD

BISMARCK – Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring has issued a special local needs (SLN) registration to Dow AgroSciences, allowing North Dakota mustard growers to apply Sonalan® 10G to stubble fields where yellow mustard will be planted the following spring.

"Herbicide options are limited for direct seeding that many mustard producers prefer in order to conserve water and reduce erosion,” Goehring said. “Sonalan 10G is an effective herbicide for managing manage a wide spectrum of grass and broadleaf weeds in these situations."

Goehring said that since no federally registered pesticide is currently available for broad-spectrum weed control in direct-seeded mustard, he believes the situation meets the criteria of being a special local need.

"This registration also put North Dakota mustard producers on a level playing field with their Canadian counterparts who are already using Sonalan for weed control,” he said.

The registration allows application of up to 9.5 pounds of formulated product per acre, depending on soil texture. The supplemental labeling prohibits use of the product to fields that have received a primary tillage treatment following crop harvest.

Users must follow all restrictions, precautions, and directions on both the SLN supplemental labeling and the container label, and they must have a copy of the SLN supplemental labeling in their possession during use.

This SLN registration, authorized by Section 24(c) of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act, is effective immediately and expires Dec. 31, 2015.
