GOEHRING EXTENDS OK OF HERBICIDE OF OILSEED

BISMARCK – Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring has extended a special local needs (SLN) registration to Syngenta Crop Protection, enabling North Dakota cuphea producers to use the herbicide Callisto® to control broadleaf weeds.

"The SLN registration was originally issued in 2005 and was scheduled to expire this month,” Goehring said. “The North Dakota Department of Agriculture (NDDA) has verified that the need for broadleaf weed control in cuphea fields is unchanged, so I have extended the SLN registration to Jan. 1, 2015.”

The Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) allows states to issue SLN pesticide registrations, known as 24(c) registrations, to meet specific local pest control needs. The registrations are reviewed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Goehring said revised supplemental labeling for using Callisto in cuphea contains the same mandatory instructions and restrictions as those approved in 2005. The supplemental labeling is available on NDDA’s online pesticide registration database at www.kellysolutions.com/nd/.

Cuphea is an oilseed with high levels of lauric acid, a natural fatty acid, and could be a substitute for imported coconut and palm kernel oils used in toothpastes, shampoos and detergents. Researchers are also looking at cuphea as an additive for biodiesel that would provide superior cold-flow properties to those of petroleum diesel.
